What is a voting district?
A voting district is a geographical area which is represented by a seat or multiple seats in a legislative body, like a city council or school board.
In elections, voters registered in a particular voting district can only vote for candidates running for office in that district. Voting districts override the "at-large" model, which Claremont historically offered.
At-large means residents in any part of the city can vote for any candidate, without worrying about where they or their preferred candidate lives.
In a single member voting district like Claremont, voters can only elect one representative within their district to the school board or city council.
To complicate matters further, the school board and city council voting districts are not the same. The numbers and geographic areas are not aligned, so it is important to check your voting district in both the school board and city council race for this November's election.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Does my endorsement matter if I don't live in your district?
YES! Although the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder limits voters to districts, your involvement as a resident in local elections is critical to democracy. As a school board member, the ONLY time I think about or consider districts is during election season. I represent all students at all schools.
There is only one open seat in District 1, and as the incumbent, your vote for another candidate in this district directly impacts my re-election to the board.
I have done the work and been committed to supporting policies that improve the lives of our students, teachers, schools and community. One term is simply not enough time to get the work done. Huge gains have been made, but a second term will ensure that the work I started is seen through.
When did this happen?
In advance of the November 2022 school board election, the Claremont Unified School District had a final hearing before the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization.
The Committee on School District Organization approved CUSD’s map at the hearing, completing the public process to change from at-large to by-district elections.
During the same year, the Claremont City Council held a similar public process independent of the school district. To view the Claremont City Council voting district map, click here.
Claremont Village residents, in general, will vote in District 1 for the CUSD school board election and District 3 for the City Council race. The maps are not aligned, so be sure to check for your district in BOTH races here.
You can then toggle down on the first window to highlight "DISTRICT MAP SEARCH BY ADDRESS." A second window will appear for you to enter your home address number in one box and your street name in a second box. Note: If you live on a numbered street (6th, 8th, 12th, etc.) be sure to enter a "0" in front of your street name (i.e., 012th).
